GEOTECHNICAL
ENGINEERING & ENGINEERING GEOLOGY
North Market Force Main & Lift Station
Redding
top
This $2-million project consists of the horizontal directional drilling (HDD) and replacement of a new sewer force main beneath the Sacramento River in the City of Redding. CGI Technical Services provided geotechnical engineering and engineering geological services to characterize the type and engineering properties of soil and rock materials along the twin 1,800-lineal-foot HDD crossings. Our services included onshore and over-water geophysical surveys, an extensive drilling and sampling program, deep test pits to observe cobble and boulder dimensions, and an elaborate geotechnical laboratory testing program. Using those data, we estimated depth to critical subsurface rock materials, performed hydraulic fracturing (frac-out) analyses, and provided design recommendations for the HDD and dry-well lift station. Our services were completed on time and within budget.

Stillwater Business Park Bridges
Redding
top
CGI Technical Services provided geotechnical engineering and engineering geological services for the design of two large bridges across Stillwater creek into the proposed 700-acre Stillwater Business Park. Both bridges are reinforced concrete, box-girder bridges with lengths of 300 and 425 feet. The structures will be supported on one or two bents that rest on 70-ton H piles. CGI Technical Services performed geophysical surveys, an extensive subsurface drilling program using conventional and all-terrain drill rigs, a detailed sampling and laboratory testing program, and provided geotechnical analyses and recommendations for pile design and construction, earthwork and fill placement, seismic design, and other parameters.

Ambrosini School
Fortuna
top
CGI Technical Services was selected to provide geotechnical engineering services for the design and construction of a number of additions and a new wing at the Ambrosini School, within the Rhonerville School District in Fortuna, California. The additions include a new classroom wing, a multipurpose room, a new kitchen, and an expanded parking lot. CGI Technical Services performed a detailed exploration and laboratory testing program, geohazards evaluation, and geotechnical assessment to provide recommendations for the design and construction of the improvements. The site has a high potential for liquefaction under earthquake forces and our assessment included recommendations for reducing the impact to the improvements due to liquefaction.

Owen’s
Student Services Building
Simpson College, Redding
top
CGI Technical Services performed a geotechnical study of the proposed
three-story student services building at Simpson College,
in Redding California. The structure is about 30,000 square feet and rests on shallow foundation systems. Services provided
included geotechnical engineering investigation, special
inspections, and sampling and testing of soils.
The
site was explored using deep excavations and an extensive
laboratory program was completed to help CGI Technical Services evaluate
allowable bearing capacities for the structure, which
has relatively large column and continuous foot loads.
The extensive laboratory testing and geotechnical
evaluation allowed CGI Technical Services to reduce conservatism and,
ultimately, saved Simpson College money on construction
of foundation systems.

Oakdale
Heights Assisted Living Facility
Redding
top
CGI Technical Services
performed a geotechnical study for this project that
involved construction of a three-story metal-framed
building, on an approximate 4-acre parcel. The building
encompasses approximately 10,000 square feet in plan
area. The building consists of a three-story
metal-framed structure with concrete slab-on-grade
floors. Asphalt concrete pavement for parking areas
and driveways covering the majority of the remaining
site. Appurtenant construction includes retaining
walls, underground utilities, storm drainage and landscaping.
Services provided included geotechnical engineering
investigation, special inspections, and sampling and
testing of soils

Best Buy Commercial
Structure
Redding
top
CGI Technical Services
provided geotechnical engineering and
construction materials testing and special inspection
services during construction of the Best Buy Retail
Outlet located in Redding, California. The project
consisted of a single story 30,000 square foot masonry
and steel-framed building with a concrete slab-on-grade.
The structure is founded on continuous and isolated
foundations. Services provided included geotechnical
engineering investigation, and special inspection
and sampling and testing of: soils, structural masonry,
concrete, structural steel and welding, high strength
bolts and bolting, and chemical and mechanical anchorages.
Prior
to development, this site was underlain by soft compressible
soils that would have exceeded settlement tolerances
if not mitigated. CGI Technical Services performed an extensive exploration,
testing, and analytical program to identify options
to reduce anticipated settlement to within acceptable
tolerances. After evaluating these options, a preferred
alternative was identified and constructed. |

Redding, Fall River Mills, Round Valley and Klamath Falls International Airports
top
CGI Technical Services
provided geotechnical services for the expansion and
rehabilitation of these airports. The projects
involved an extensive exploration and laboratory testing
program at each airport to evaluate CBR values and subsurface geotechnical conditions. Those
values were utilized to estimate the modulus of subgrade
reaction so that concrete pavement sections could
be prepared for the proposed improvements. In addition,
the CBR values were provided for use in asphaltic
concrete pavement section design for apron rehabilitation
and reconstruction, and for the expansion and construction
of new taxiways. |

Fairchild
Medical Center
Yreka
top
CGI Technical Services
provided geotechnical engineering, construction materials
testing and special inspection services during construction
of the new medical office buildings and street improvements
located in Yreka, California. The project consisted
of three, two-story buildings with cast-in-place concrete
slab-on-grade floors. The structures are founded on
continuous and isolated foundations. Services provided
include preparation of the geotechnical engineering
report, observation, and testing during site grading,
testing and special inspection of reinforcing steel,
concrete, and structural steel and welding.

Retail Outlet located off Hilltop Drive in Redding,
California. The project consisted of a single story
19,000 square foot masonry and steel-framed building
with a cast-in-place concrete slab-on-grade. The structure
was founded on continuous and isolated foundations.
Services provided included geotechnical engineering
investigation, special inspections, and sampling and
testing of: soils, structural masonry, structural
concrete, structural steel and welding, high strength
bolts and bolting, and chemical and mechanical anchorages.
